Studio Row's Premiere Dispensary

As our neighborhood’s first dispensary, we at the Pharm are proud to take part in the revitalization of Studio Row. Characterized by the iconic Church Studio, the recording studio that originated the “Tulsa Sound,” Studio Row pays respect to Tulsa’s rich musical history. And we’re no exception! In commemoration of music’s long history with Cannabis, we’ve dedicated our style to some true legends.

Learn more about Oklahoma’s music history below!

JJ Cale

Born in OKC and raised in Tulsa, JJ Cale was a guitarist, singer, and songwriter considered to be one of the great originators of the Tulsa Sound. Characterized by a shuffling beat, mumbling lyrics, and bluesy guitar lines, Cale’s talent was made famous by Eric Clapton, for whom he wrote many songs. In the words of Clapton, JJ Cale was “one of the most important artists in the history of rock.”

Charlie Wilson

Born and raised in Tulsa, Charlie Wilson is a singer, songwriter, and record producer. As the lead vocalist of the well-known Gap Band, Wilson and his brothers helped to bring an upbeat form of funk to the mainstream. True to their T-Town roots, the band was named after Greenwood, Archer, and Pine, of the historic Greenwood District. They got their first big break as the backup band for Leon Russel in 1974, and recorded their first LP in the historic Church Studio that year. Charlie Wilson has pursued a successful solo career and is still active in the music industry. In recent years, he’s worked with the likes of Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, and Pharrell Williams. He’s especially close with Cannabis King Snoop Dogg, who famously nicknamed Wilson, “Uncle Charlie.”

Church Studio

A legacy landmark synonymous with Leon Russell, The Church Studio played a significant role in American music history. Originally, the building was Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, one of the earliest churches in Tulsa, built in 1913. After surviving the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, it changed hands several times before Leon Russell purchased the building. Used as a creative workspace for many songwriters, singers, musicians, and engineers, the studio served many award-winning artists such as Leon Russell, JJ Cale, and The GAP Band. Church Studio is now the focus of restoration, not only of the structure, but of the surrounding neighborhood, now known as Studio Row. The latest owners are on a mission to propel legacy the of Russell and establish the studio as a historic landmark. The building will be used to preserve and make accessible the permanent items of the The Church Studio Archive and engage general community through music programs, festivals, education, video, film, and more.

Leon Russell

Born in Lawton and raised in Tulsa, Leon Russell was a guitarist, singer, and pianist considered to be one of the great originators of the Tulsa Sound. He worked with musicians including Eric Clapton and Ringo Starr and was a mentor and inspiration to Elton John, who was known to be one of Russell’s biggest early fans. With a sound characterized as blown-out and exaggerated, “very free and loose,” his multifaceted 60-year career made him one of America’s most influential musicians. During the 70’s, he was the owner of the historic Church Studio, which served as a creative workshop for songwriters, musicians, engineers, and singers to collaborate, learn, and inspire.
